What is R Value? R value is an insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R value — the higher the R value, the greater the insulation effectiveness. The R value depends on the type of attic insulation, its thickness, and its density. The recommended level for most attics in Hampton Roads is to insulate to R-49 or about 15 to 16 inches, depending on the insulation type.
Sometimes your insulation may be worn down, has settled some, or is just not pulling its weight. If you don’t have any pest damage or other issues with the existing attic insulation, opting to add more is a great way to increase your insulation efficiency. Not to mention a great way to reduce heating and AC bills.
If you feel the insulation levels in your attic do not meet the recommended R-49, contact Universal Insulation Doctor today for your free quote.

A homeowner in Virginia Beach was struggling with an upstairs that was consistently 10–15 degrees hotter than the ground floor. Their power bill was over $400 a month in the summer. During our Free Photo Inspection, we found their existing insulation had settled to just 4 inches (R-11). We performed a clean Insulation Removal, sanitized the attic to remove old rodent proteins, and installed 16 inches of our Pest Guard Insulation (R-49). Within 48 hours, the upstairs temperature matched the downstairs exactly, and their next energy bill dropped by $115. We don’t just ‘add’ insulation; we engineer a thermal barrier that pays for itself.
In 2026, a professional R-49 upgrade for a standard 1,200 sq. ft. attic typically ranges from $1,800 to $3,200. Factors include whether old insulation needs removal and if you choose our exclusive Pest Guard blend. We offer SmartPay options starting at $0 down, so you can start saving on utilities immediately.
Standard insulation is often a nesting ground for pests. Our Universal Pest Guard Insulation™ is a premium fiberglass blend treated with a borate pesticide. It provides superior thermal resistance while controlling self-grooming insects like roaches, ants, and silverfish. To legally install this, a company must be a licensed pest control entity—which we are through Universal Pest & Termite.
If your current insulation is dry and free of pests, we can perform an 'Attic Capping'—adding new material on top to reach the R-49 level. however, if there are signs of rodent droppings, urine, or moisture damage, a full Insulation Removal and sanitization is required to ensure your family isn't breathing in airborne contaminants.
For the Hampton Roads climate, the Department of Energy recommends R-49, which is approximately 15 to 16 inches of insulation. Most older homes in our area only have 4–6 inches, meaning they are significantly under-insulated and wasting hundreds of dollars in energy costs every year.
Yes. Our high-density insulation acts as a sound dampener. Homeowners in high-traffic areas or near NAS Oceana often report a noticeable decrease in noise from aircraft, traffic, and weather after upgrading to a full R-49 Pest Guard system
